The K-61 Enhancement Project studied a corridor approximately 22 miles long and
six miles wide corridor along existing K-61 from 17th Street in Hutchinson to
the present four-lane highway southwest of McPherson. The study considered the
impact of a four-lane highway built on the existing location as well as
locations off the current highway alignment. Both freeway and expressway
options were analyzed.
Corridor Study
Multiple corridors were analyzed and eventually narrowed down to three, 1,000
foot wide, concept corridors. These corridors were further refined and a
preferred corridor was selected. The preferred corridor was approximately 1,000
feet wide. This corridor provided for bypasses around the west sides of Inman
and Medora, but otherwise, generally followed the existing K-61 alignment.
Also studied was the issue of whether the entire corridor should be a freeway,
where access would be allowed only at grade-separated interchanges, or whether
the corridor should be a combination freeway and
expressway, allowing some access points to be at-grade intersections
and others to be grade-separated interchanges.
The study resulted in a recommendation for a combination freeway and expressway.
Reno County would be combination rural and urban freeway with access provided
at one signalized intersection and two interchanges. McPherson County would be
a combination freeway and expressway with at-grade intersections at five
locations and interchanges at Inman and McPherson. Double click on the links
