Environmental Documents
Welcome to the Environmental document section for the K-61 Enhancement project.
In accordance with the regulations and guidelines of the National Environmental
Protection Act (NEPA) and other federal and state regulating bodies, KDOT has
prepared two major environmental documents for the K-61 project:

the Environmental Assessment
[Note: Appendix A of the Environmental Assessment document contains many of the
aerial photos and maps used for K-61 project development.]

the Finding of No significant Impact (FONSI).
We invite you to review these documents. If you have any questions, please

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has completed the Environmental
Assessment, (EA) Section 4(f) Evaluation and the Finding of No Significant
Impact (FONSI) documents for the proposed highway improvements to the K-61
corridor between Hutchinson and McPherson. The Environmental Assessment and
Section 4(f) Evaluation document specified the possible improvements. The FONSI
document was written when the FHWA agreed that the project did not have a
significant impact.
The 30 day period for the public to comment on the Environmental Assessment and
Section 4(f) Evaluation was from March 24 to April 26, 2004. The comments were
compiled and reviewed by KDOT and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
Upon completion of this review, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
agreed with KDOT's findings in the Environment Assessment; therefore, a Finding
of No Significant Impact (FONSI) document was prepared by KDOT and submitted to
FHWA On July 2, 2004, the FONSI document was approved by the FHWA. This
concluded the documentation required to comply with the National Environmental
Protection Act.
During the Design Phase, more detailed information about environmental impacts
was developed and KDOT is pursuing the appropriate permits and approvals for
the construction phase of the project.
Since March 24, 2004, copies of the Environmental Assessment and Section 4(f)
Evaluation have been available for public viewing during regular business hours
