This calendar is a convenient listing of public events connected to the K-61
Enhancement project.
K-61 Enhancement Project Update Open House Summary
September 19-20, 2006
The Kansas Department of Transportation conducted two open houses enabling the
public to review the right of way designs and gather input prior to beginning
final design and engineering plans. A total of 65 people (and 15 public
officials) attended the Inman event while 79 people (and 4 public officials)
visted the Hutchinson event.
| Kitchen Table Meetings : January 31 to February 4 | | Monday, January 31, 2005 | | by appointment - none | | Hutchinson, Inman, and McPherson | Purpose: During the week of January 31, three project sub-teams of three to five persons each met with individuals whose property will be directly affected by the new highway. The meetings were by
appointment and were held concurrently in Hutchinson, Inman, and McPherson. Property owners were sent letters
inviting them to make an appointment at a location convenient for them and follow-up calls were made to those who did not make appointments.
The meetings provided an opportunity for owners to learn more about the project, see how the alignment might affect their
property, ask questions, and discuss concerns about access and buying property for right-of-way. A K-61
information sheet was handed out to each property owner, along with Right-of-Way information.

Hutchinson, and Inman to a briefing about the K-61 Enhancement Project. The meeting was held
Monday, January 31, 2005 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm at the Dillon Nature Center, Hutchinson. The
purpose of the meeting was to brief local officials about the project and about the "Kitchen
Table" meetings held with individual property owners the week of January 31. |

discussion from the September meeting regarding the freeway and the freeway/expressway combination
alternates. Additionally, the three potential interchange designs for McPherson were reviewed and
discussed. |
| | Drop-In Center | | Saturday, September 21, 2002 | | 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM | | Reno and McPherson Counties | | Purpose: The Drop-in centers are set up in locations convenient for citizens to provide opportunities for
public input in a less formal environment. Previous Drop-in centers have included the Hutchinson Mall,
Inman Public Library and Dillons Grocery Store in McPherson. |
| | Community Advisory Group Meeting | | Thursday, September 19, 2002 | | 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM | | McPherson, Kansas | | Purpose: The meeting was held at the Holiday Manor Motel in McPherson. The meeting focused on a review of
the factors that lead to the selection of a preferred corridor and provided an opportunity to ensure
that the Community Advisory Group was in concurrence with the preferred corridor. Additionally, a
detailed review of the freeway and the freeway/expressway combination facility type was provided. |

on issues raised at the last Advisory Group meeting including an update on the status of the
environmental a process, a discussion of local traffic and the Origin/Destination Survey, a review
of the accident analysis conducted by PEC, a discussion of the projects Purpose and Need Statement,
and a continuation of the discussion on the preliminary corridor concepts. |

socio-economic and travel related trends, a presentation on the environmental approval process, a
discussion of right of way procedures, and a review of some preliminary corridor concepts.
Presentations about planning efforts will be made to the group, and input from the group will help
guide planning efforts. |

The group heard a presentation on some of the factors that affect the physical design of the roadway
and discussed their goals for an improved K-61. |

| | Telephone Survey Results Available | | Wednesday, October 10, 2001 | | none - none | | McPherson and Reno Counties | | Purpose: A telephone survey was conducted in September to provide statistically valid information about
the opinions and knowledge of a broad audience in the study area. Nine hundred households were
surveyed in Reno and McPherson Counties (450 in each county). |
| | Origin Destination Survey | | Saturday, September 01, 2001 | | none - none | | Along K-61 Highway | | Purpose: An origin destination survey is used by transportation planners to collect
travel information from the actual users of a highway. Among the items collected are where their
trip began, where their trip will end, the trip's purpose and the number of times a week the trip
is made. This data allows transportation planners to analyze the major traffic patterns that exist
and to plan improvements to serve those traffic patterns. |
