Design activities for the new K-61 between Hutchinson and McPherson are well underway. In early 2003, after more than two years of study and public participation, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) identified a quarter-mile wide corridor in which the future four-lane K-61 would be located. Since then, a project team has been refining the concept into a specific alignment and design for the new highway.
Now that more is known about the highway’s location and design, KDOT is hosting "Kitchen Table" meetings to talk with landowners whose property will be directly affected by the improvements. The idea behind the meetings is to have an informal discussion with individual owners about concerns and issues associated with the project, much like what might happen around a kitchen table. KDOT estimates there are 154 owners whose property could be directly affected by the project.
During the week of January 31, three project sub-teams of three to five persons each will meet with individuals whose property is likely to be directly affected by the new highway. The meetings are by appointment and will be held concurrently in Hutchinson, Inman, and McPherson. Property owners were sent letters inviting them to make an appointment at a location convenient for them. The meetings are an opportunity for owners to learn more about the project, see how the alignment may affect their property, ask questions, and discuss concerns about access and buying property for right-of-way. They also give the project teams a chance to discuss how KDOT might address individual concerns while still meeting the needs of the many travelers who will use the new road.
KDOT has tried to reach all directly affected property owners, but property sales and other issues may mean there are a few people who weren’t contacted. Owners who weren’t contacted and think their property may be directly affected by the K-61 project can call toll-free 1-888-276-8787 to see if a meeting should be scheduled. A telephone representative will be available throughout the week and may be able to schedule additional meetings if needed. In the weeks following the meetings, the project website, www.k61enhancement.org, will be updated with current information and alignment illustrations.
