| K-61 Project Sponsors “Opt-in” System Enhancement Project | Tuesday, February 10, 2004
| The Location and Design Concept Study for the K-61 System Enhancement Project between Hutchinson and McPherson has come to an end as all five local sponsors have decided to support the project. Hutchinson, McPherson, Inman, McPherson County, and Reno County all announced their approvals to the 2 ½ year study during the thirty day "opt-out" period following the completion of the study. The new four-lane access controlled facility will run from just north of 17th Street in Hutchinson, northeast to the existing four-lane south of McPherson.
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is currently working on the Environmental Assessment (EA) which is projected to be completed in early spring 2004. Upon completion, notification will be provided in the local media informing the public as to where the EA can be viewed during the 30-day comment period. Common viewing sites are local government offices and libraries in and around the project area.
The design consultants for the project have been selected and the design process is just getting underway. The preliminary design is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2006, with right-of-way acquisitions beginning in late 2007. Construction of the $197 million project will start in 2009 with completion to be wrapped up by late 2010.
