A Kansas Department of Transportation survey party is expected to begin work Wednesday, January 15,
on K-61 from near 17th Street in Hutchinson northeast to the existing four-lane roadway at McPherson.
The Survey in Reno and McPherson counties is necessary to gather information for construction of a
proposed four-lane divided highway. Survey work will be done in the area designated as the Preferred
Corridor at public meetings held last month in Hutchinson and McPherson. Additional information will be
gathered to cover the area along existing K-61 between Hutchinson and Medora.
The corridor typically follows the existing highway with the exception of the area north of Hutchinson,
the Medora bypass and the area just southwest of McPherson. The 22.4-mile survey is expected to take
eight months. Work will involve the placing of plastic targets on the ground for aerial photo
identification and the use of instruments on the ground to determine distances, elevations and angles.
When it becomes necessary for crew members to enter private property, they will first obtain permission
from the landowner or tenant. Tom Conkright, R.L.S., with KDOT, will be in charge of the survey.
